What happens when you get stung by one of the nastier injury bugs in recent NFL history? In the case of the Packers, you get four new players off the waiver wire in the space of 48 hours — LBs Diyral Briggs, Matt Wilhelm and Erik Walden and NT Howard Green — who all figure to make their presence felt sooner than later, out of necessity. The need for outside reinforcements intensified when OLB Brad Jones joined RB Ryan Grant, SS Morgan Burnett, TE Jermichael Finley and MLB Nick Barnett as the fifth Packers starter to be placed on injured reserve this season. With Jones facing shoulder surgery, the onus falls at least initially on undrafted rookie Frank Zombo, who team insiders believe is a substantial downgrade as the starting right outside linebacker despite some promising spurts. Briggs, Wilhelm and Walden are also all expected to become factors pretty quickly on Green Bay’s special teams.
