According to a report from the Newark Star Ledger, the Giants will place OLB-DE Mathias Kiwanuka on injured reserve in order to free up a roster spot for CB-KR Will Blackmon, who worked out for the team Wednesday and reportedly will be signed Thursday.

Kiwanuka had four sacks in the first three games this season before being sidelined by a herniated disk in his neck. He has not played since. Although he expressed optimism about coming back to finish his contract year, the team apparently decided it couldn't wait any longer and wanted to use the roster spot to bolster its returns.

The Giants are tied for last in kickoff returns at 17.5 yards per return and rank 30th in punt returns at a paltry 5.9 yards per return.

Blackmon, who just turned 26, returned three punts for touchdowns during his four seasons with Green Bay. However, he has been sidelined by injuries in three of the four seasons, playing in just 32 games over that span. He was placed on injured reserve as part of the Packers' final cuts in early September and left the team with an injury settlement. He has been a free agent ever since.

Kiwanunka, 27, has 23½ sacks in 61 career games with the Giants since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2006.
