The loss of star MLB DeMeco Ryans to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury weakens a Texans defense that is struggling in multiple areas. Ryans, who has started every game in his NFL career, rarely comes off the field and is regarded as one of the game's better players at his position. To replace Ryans, the Texans will move SLB Brian Cushing to the middle. "We want him to lead our defense," head coach Gary Kubiak said Monday, according to the team. Cushing hasn't started a game in the middle in college or the pros. Nine-year veteran Kevin Bentley will take over for Cushing on the strong side, with Zac Diles remaining the starter on the weak side. Through six games, the Texans were surrendering 410.5 yards — about 26 percent more than a season ago. They are also allowing seven points more per game.
