49ers QB Alex Smith had his injured left shoulder checked in a London hospital on Monday morning and is still unsure if he can play against the Broncos at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The 1-6 Niners flew to London from Charlotte after losing to the Panthers 23-20 in Week Seven. Smith suffered the shoulder injury when he was sacked in the third quarter. Backup QB David Carr replaced him.
"It's all right. Could be better," Smith said after returning to the team's hotel from the hospital.
Smith was 9-of-19 passing for 129 yards and a TD before leaving with the score tied 10-10. Carr was just 5-of-13 passing for 67 yards and threw a crucial interception late in the game.
The way we see it
The Niners, most people's preseason favorite to win the NFC West, are in panic mode now after giving the Panthers their first victory of the season. Fans have even chanted for Carr to replace Smith, but the former No. 1 pick did not fare well in his chance on Sunday. After watching the Broncos give up 328 rushing yards to the Raiders, the 49ers could give RB Frank Gore a lot of action Sunday at Wembley and take pressure off whomever starts at QB.
