Steelers DE Aaron Smith will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his triceps muscle during the team's Week Seven victory vs. the Dolphins, according to NFL.com.

Smith will undergo further tests on Monday, but is expected that the 12-year pro will be placed on injured reserve. Fellow linemen Brett Keisel, who missed the Miami game with a hamstring injury, Nick Eason and Ziggy Hood will likely see more playing time in the coming weeks. Practice squad players Steve McLendon and Doug Worthington may also be elevated to the 53-man roster.

The way we see it

Smith is not the high-profile defender that teammates Troy Polamalu and James Harrison are, but his value is clear. Heading into Week Four, Pro Football Weekly ran a feature about the Steelers' defense that stated in all Pittsburgh games since 2004, the team has allowed 4.4 yards per rush in games Smith didn't play in compared to only 3.5 yards a run in games where Smith suits up.
