49ers QB Alex Smith has left Sunday's game against the Panthers after injuring his left shoulder. QB David Carr replaced Smith with the game tied at 10.

Smith threw a 53-yard pass to TE Vernon Davis early in the game and found him on the next play for a one-yard TD. Smith was 9-of-19 passing for 129 yards before being sacked by Panthers DE Charles Johnson and leaving the game.

Carr, the former No. 1 draft pick, played in just six games last season. He has not started a game since 2007.

The way we see it

Some 49ers fans might be pleased to see Carr in the game. Smith has been inconsistent this season and fans have chanted for Carr to replace him. But Smith has responded to the adversity for the most part, but now Carr has his chance to prove himself to the Niners' coaching staff.
