Jones losing grip on Packers' No. 3 WR job

Following are some of the whispers we've been hearing from around the NFC North:

• Look for Jordy Nelson to get increased playing time at the expense of James Jones as the Packers' No. 3 receiver. Jones has had a tendency to drift mentally and make ill-timed mistakes on a fairly regular basis. He got an earful from WR coach Jimmy Robinson after his halfhearted attempt to break up an interception by Dolphins CB Jason Allen in the Week Six loss to Miami.

• It has been clear that Lions RB Jahvid Best was not the same after suffering turf toes on both feet. He has struggled to plant and drive as easily and has to be one of the Lions who will benefit most from the bye week. Although the toe injuries are likely to linger beyond that, he should regain some of his explosiveness with extra rest.

• Vikings DE Jared Allen might be coming on. Amid talk that he is being worn down by almost never coming off the field, Allen is coming off his best game of the season against the Cowboys, despite not getting a sack. He has only one on the season, but it appears that Allen is raising his intensity right when people are questioning whether he is fading.

• Bears rookie S Major Wright, who has been sidelined since Week Two with a hamstring injury, returned to practice this week, but he may not play until Chicago returns from a bye in Week Nine. While there was some talk of Wright becoming a starter at free safety before he sustained the injury, he'll likely come off the bench in a rotational role with starting safeties Chris Harris and Danieal Manning when he returns.
