Buccaneers rookie DT Gerald McCoy's admission this week that he is just now figuring out how his coaches want him to play his position was alarming to some observers. The apparent disconnect helps explain why McCoy hasn't made as much of an impact as some were expecting from him when he was drafted third overall. The Oklahoma product said he now believes he can play loose after being more reserved in the first five games of the season.

"In the midst of finding out what (the coaches) want me to do I actually learned how to play the game and how things go, and snap counts and how guys block," McCoy said in a conference call with reporters Oct. 20. "So I can kind of put that together with my game and mix it up a bit."

The Bucs have used McCoy, who has eight tackles and a forced fumble, at every spot on the defensive line already this season, but he primarily is a three-technique.
