The Saints made a couple of moves on Wednesday, placing CB Randall Gay on injured reserve and releasing LB Clint Ingram.
Gay has suffered multiple concussions over the last few years and the lasting effects have brought his season to an end.
Ingram had been nursing a knee injury and was set to come off the physically unable to perform list this week.
CB Quincy Butler has been called up from the practice squad to take Gay's spot on the roster.
The way we see it
Gay's placement on I.R. is a big hit to a depleted Saints secondary. New Orleans already is missing starting CB Tracy Porter, who is out with a torn knee ligament. With Gay out for the season and Porter set to miss another week or two, a once-deep Saints defense will be very vulnerable in the secondary in the coming weeks.
The Saints didn't believe Ingram was going to be able to contribute this season and decided to stick with LBs Jo-Lonn Dunbar and Danny Clark.
