Here's a sampling of things heard this week by Vikings and Cowboys players and coaches:

Vikings head coach Brad Childress on whether the team's margin for error has shrunk with the team at 1-3: "I'm not a gambler so I don't bet the odds or anything like that on percentages. I'm just looking at what kind of football team the Cowboys are. I'm not anticipating not winning this week. I'm not anticipating what two wins means as opposed to one win. One day at a time here."

Childress on how concerned he is with the mental and physical state of QB Brett Favre: "I'm worried about both, but I'm worried about a lot of guys' emotional state. I just don't want guys to get mentally ill four games into the season. We talk about that. You make your corrections and then you get on with your next opponent. You don't let the last game beat you twice. I think he's got a decent balance; we'll just see how his arm shapes up here the rest of this week."

Childress clarifying his level of worry: "I should go back and say concerned, I am concerned about everybody on our football team. I am not overly concerned about where he’s at with whatever he’s got going on in his life. I don’t mean to minimize it, but it is what it is. I see a guy that’s here, ready and prepared, doing the work. I don’t see ill effects from that."

Childress on whether it's easier for a veteran such as E.J. Henderson to come back from a serious injury two seasons in a row than it is for a younger player such as Cedric Griffin: "That’s a great question. Cedric is one of those guys that I feel like has the same kind of constitution as E.J. There may be a 24-hour period, and I don’t even know if there was a wallowing period, but I was in the training room with him earlier today and he was working on his range-of-motion things. The only good perspective he has is that he knows what the work is in front of him because was just through it with his left leg. I point to a guy like Chad Greenway, who went through two of those in college, blew out his right leg and then did his left leg here and he’s still a very good player. Cedric will take it as a challenge to beat how fast he came back from the other one."

Favre on two 1-3 teams playing: "Who would have thought both teams would be 1-3. I know when we played those guys in the playoffs last year, I was, as you should always be concerned about your opponent, I felt like and I think most people felt like at that time they were playing as well as anyone. I still believe that. We were playing pretty good as well. There’s still a ton of football left for both teams. Whoever loses will obviously be 1-4, but it’s still wide open. I know several years ago the Giants started slow, but picked it up and we know what happened with them. That’s not to say that it gives you a free pass to lose. We call it desperate. Whatever. Both teams are well aware of what’s at stake. Record aside, both teams are still very capable and very good football teams."

Favre on where this season's stress ranks in his career: "I don’t know. I don’t rank them. I’ll say this. I’m thrilled to be here and have an opportunity to lead this team to a Super Bowl. This week I was thrilled that we got Randy. There’s still a lot of football left. I feel very confident in a lot of ways. You go through different things in your life. Football is a very tough sport, mentally and physically. Last year was great, almost too great. But I woke this morning and was eager, a little tired from the trip, but was eager to get over here; more so than last year at this time, to get this back on track. I feel that confident that it will right itself in the end. I don’t rank any on- or off-the-field deals, but I’m excited about this deal."

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips on whether this is a "desperation" game: "It’s the fifth game of the year. It’s the fifth game for us and them. It’s an important game. It’s a big game. It’s a road game for us. We think this is the most important game of the year for us. That’s the way we approach it."

Phillips on how Randy Moss changes the way the Cowboys defend the Vikings: "Everybody knows that’s a problem. He’s a top-notch receiver and one of the best receivers in the league. He just got there and he scored a touchdown last week. They’ve already connected with him. We’re worried about them connecting more with him. He’s a real threat and he always has been."

Cowboys QB Tony Romo on the playoff loss in Minnesota last season: "It was tough. It’s a tough place. They played well. Give them credit. They did a lot of good things in that game. They beat us. Hopefully we come up and play a lot better this time."

Romo on the Vikings' secondary compared to the one he faced in January: "They look every bit; flying to the ball, they’re tough, they’re physical. They got good personnel. They’ve got a good scheme. They know what they’re doing. It’s a great, great challenge for us to come up there and perform."
