The Browns announced the signing of QB Brett Ratliff from the Patriots' practice squad on Tuesday. They also announced they had released veteran WR Sam Aiken.

Ratliff, 25, is back for his second stint with the Browns this year. Cleveland waived him on Sept. 4 as it cut its roster down to the 53-player limit. The Browns acquired him from the Jets on April 25, 2009, and he spent last season with Cleveland as a reserve.

The signing of Ratliff comes with the Browns' top two quarterbacks, Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, having been hobbled by ankle injuries. Rookie Colt McCoy and Ratliff would likely be the Browns' top two quarterbacks at Pittsburgh on Sunday if Delhomme and Wallace can't play.

Considering the circumstances, this was a good signing for Cleveland. Though he has never appeared in a regular-season game, Ratliff is familiar with Brian Daboll's offense and received playing time with Cleveland in the preseason, attempting 34 passes.
