The 49ers claimed S C.J. Spillman off waivers from the Chargers on Tuesday and waived CB Tramaine Block.

Spillman is in his second year and played in five games, recording seven tackles, in 2009 with the Chargers. He notched six special-teams tackles in five games this season in San Diego.

The 49ers also released FB Jehuu Caulcrick from their practice squad.

The way we see it

With the loss of veteran S Michael Lewis, this can add some depth at the position behind rookie Taylor Mays. Spillman also has plenty of special-teams experience to bolster that unit.
