The Bills activated TE Shawn Nelson to their 53-man roster on Monday and waived OLB Chris Ellis.

Nelson underwent groin surgery in early September and was limited in practice last week. Nelson was also suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

In 12 starts in his rookie season, Nelson had 17 catches for 156 yards with one touchdown. The Bills are 0-5 to start the season for the first time since 1985.

Ellis was attempting to transition from defensive end to an OLB spot in the Bills' new 3-4 defense. He started the season opener but did not record any defensive statistics in any of the last four games.

The way we see it

Nelson should bolster a Bills offense that is 30th in the league. He had a productive rookie season and should become a weapon over the middle for QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills have a bye in Week Six so he will get another week of practice before returning to action.
