Panthers WR Steve Smith will miss Carolina's Week Five game against the Bears with an ankle injury.
The four-time Pro Bowler sprained his ankle in the Panthers' 16-14 loss to the Saints last week and has been wearing a protective boot all week.
S Sherrod Martin also was ruled out of Sunday's contest, as was LB Jamar Williams (neck) and ORT Jeff Otah (knee).
The way we see it
QB Jimmy Clausen and the Panthers already were struggling with the passing game, compiling just 155 yards per game. Carolina will feel the loss of its top receiver, who leads the team in receptions (13), receiving yards (174) and touchdowns (two). The rest of the WR corps has totaled 13-194-0 this season, and two of the receptions were by recently released WR Dwayne Jarrett.
RB Mike Goodson and TE Dante Rosario could see increased looks with Smith out of action. While Clausen likely will struggle without his top receiver and odds are good that RBs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams will be used heavily, he has a chance to make some plays against the Bears' 27th-ranked pass defense.
