Penalties major concern for Titans

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels and QB Kyle Orton criticized the Titans for what they thought to be chippy play in Denver's 26-20 Week Four win at Tennessee. Titans head coach Jeff Fisher disagreed with the contention that his team takes cheap shots and indicated the team will continue to be aggressive within the bounds of the rules. But Fisher also has said that his team, which was tied for the NFL lead in penalties (37) and No. 1 in penalty yards (344) through four games and had 10 penalties vs. Denver, had to cut down on its mistakes. Two issues to watch: the Titans have been flagged 18 times for offside, encroachment, neutral-zone infraction or false start, and they have been flagged 11 times for major, 15-yard infractions. The Titans, who committed 98 penalties last season, slightly above the league average of 94.7, are on pace to commit 50 more penalties in 2010.
