Hours after an embarrassing primetime performance vs. the Patriots, the Dolphins have fired special-teams coach John Bonamego.

Miami had a punt and a field goal blocked in the 41-14 loss and also allowed a 103-yard kickoff return for a TD. The field-goal block was returned for a TD, and the punt block led to a Patriots TD. A week ago vs. the Jets, the Dolphins had a punt blocked.

Assistant special-teams coach Darren Rizzi will replace Bonamego, according to head coach Tony Sparano.

"I truly appreciate everything that Bono (Bonamego) has done for us. I think he's an outstanding coach, a hell of a person and a really good friend," said Sparano.

The way we see it

When head coach Tony Sparano was asked if the problems on special teams were due to coaching or execution after the game, his response: "Next question." Maybe he knew then it was a schematic situation that failed the Dolphins on three aspects of special teams. This was a quick reaction to a monumental failure, and we'll find out in their next game if it was truly Bonamego that doomed the special teams.
