Jets WRs David Clowney and Patrick Turner will be released to create roster space for WR Santonio Holmes and DL Howard Green, according to multiple reports.

Holmes, acquired by the team in April, has been suspended for the first four weeks for a violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. The former Super Bowl hero for the Steelers was the team's best wideout in training camp and the preseason, and is expected to contribute immediately in the Jets' passing game.

Green was released last Friday when the team signed DE Trevor Pryce. It was expected the team would re-sign Green soon, as head coach Rex Ryan told reporters that he had a "funny feeling" that the lineman would be back.

Both Clowney and Turner were seen as space fillers until Holmes returned. Clowney had been cut at the end of training camp due to a lack of effort on special teams, but was signed again when the team missed his downfield speed as a receiver. He caught one pass for 22 yards on the season. Turner was signed in September after being cut by the Dolphins to provide WR depth, but was only active for one game and did not make a reception.

The way we see it

Everything done Monday by GM Mike Tannebaum was expected. Holmes' return left little room for Clowney and Turner, and the Jets were happy to bring back a player they like in Green to add defensive-line depth. Clowney or Turner may appear on the Jets' practice squad, and if an injury to a wideout occurs later in the season, it would not be a surprise to see them back on the active roster.
