The Saints have decided to activate PK John Carney for their Week Four matchup with the Panthers, only days after the team signed him to a contract.
Garrett Hartley, who started the season as the team's regular placekicker but has struggled through three weeks, is inactive for the game. He has made only 4-of-7 field-goal attempts this season, missing a 29-yard field goal in overtime in Week Three that would have won the game vs. the Falcons.
Carney will be embarking on his 23rd year in the league when he kicks for the Saints this afternoon. He is third on the league's all-time scoring list with 2,044 career points. Last year he kicked in 11 games for the Saints but was cut in December; he re-joined the team following his release as a kicking consultant for Hartley.
The way we see it
Despite Hartley winning the Saints' Week Two game vs. the 49ers with a last-second kick, head coach Sean Payton had seen enough of his inconsistencies this season. It remains to be seen if Carney, the league's oldest player at 46, is a better fit for the team.
