The Steelers placed QB Dennis Dixon on injured reserve Saturday after he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus. They signed DT Steve McLendon to take Dixon's roster spot.

Dixon started the first two games of the season for Pittsburgh with Ben Roethlisberger suspended and Byron Leftwich out with an injury. He led them to a victory in Week One against the Falcons and suffered the injury in Week Two against the Buccaneers. Charlie Batch took over and started in Week Three.

McLendon played in Week Two but was cut after that game and added to the practice squad. He provides depth at the DT spot with Chris Hoke out because of an injury.

The way we see it

Dixon provided a spark for the Steelers in the first game of the season before his injury. With  Roethlisberger returning after their Week Five bye, this isn't a huge loss for the Steelers. Leftwich is getting healthy, and Batch played well in his start, so Roethlisberger should have enough capable backups behind him when he returns.
