Last season, covering tight ends was a problem for the Dolphins. Through three games this season, not much has changed. Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe caught six passes for 86 yards in Week Two and Jets TE Dustin Keller had 6-98 with two touchdowns in Week Three. The Dolphins' biggest offseason acquisition on defense, ILB Karlos Dansby, is supposed to help covering tight ends. But with starting ILB Channing Crowder out the first three games with a groin injury, Dansby has been asked to do everything — stop the run, rush the QB and cover the tight end. The situation will improve with Crowder back as he can help in the run defense and allow Dansby to focus on the opposing tight end. But we hear another option the team is considering is CB Sean Smith, who lost his starting job to Jason Allen before the season started. Smith, who has the size of a linebacker at 6-3, 214, had success covering Shiancoe and could improve a long-standing problem for the team.
