With QB Ben Roethlisberger set to return from suspension in the Steelers' fifth game of the season after the Week Five bye, Charlie Batch's short stint as Pittsburgh's starter will be over. And what an unlikely stint it was. Batch, 35, was fourth on the QB pecking order for most of the summer. There was speculation Batch would be cut and the Steelers would keep just Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon as backups on the 53-player roster, with Batch, a Homestead, Pa., native, only a phone call away if needed. But Leftwich and then Dixon left the lineup with injuries, giving Batch a chance, and he came through with three TD passes at Tampa Bay in Week Three. Batch doesn't have an exceptionally strong arm — his two longest TD throws against Tampa Bay could have been intercepted — and his durability is also a concern, but he has shown he can still play when called upon. A Steelers backup since 2002, Batch knows the offense and has been a good resource for Roethlisberger, according to a daily team observer.
