49ers SS Michael Lewis has left the team for personal reasons and will likely not play on Sunday vs. the Falcons. Head coach Mike Singletary would not inform reporters the reasons for Lewis' absence.
"It's personal reasons. I don't want to go into whether it's football, whether it's family, I don't want to go into that," Singletary said. "It's personal reasons and anything you want to find out about that you're going to have to talk to Mike."
Rookie Taylor Mays will likely start if Lewis is unavailable for Week Four. During the team's first three games, the second-round pick has only two total tackles.
The way we see it
With all their distractions, the last thing the 49ers needed was a key starter missing Sunday's game for unknown reasons. Mays, like Lewis, is better known for his run support than his pass coverage, which will be useful vs. the Falcons' rush-heavy attack.
