NFL announces rookies, players of the month

The NFL announced Thursday its rookies and players of the month for September.

Lions RB Jahvid Best and Eagles S Nate Allen are the NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Month for September. Best leads all NFL rookies with 307 scrimmage yards and a league-best five TDs.

Allen has started all three games at safety for the Eagles recording 12 tackles, two interceptions and a sack.

Texans RB Arian Foster, Colts DE Robert Mathis and Bengals K Mike Nugent were named AFC Players of the Month. Foster had a league-high 406 rushing yards in September with three TDs.

Mathis has recorded 11 tackles, four sacks and one forced fumble throgh three games. He recorded a sack in each of the Colts' first three games.

Nugent was 8-for-8 kicking field goals in September, including two 50+ yarders. His five field goals totaled all the Bengals' points in their Week Two victory over the Ravens.

Eagles QB Michael Vick, Packers LB Clay Matthews and Saints KR-ST Courtney Roby were named the NFC Players of the Month. Vick has an NFC-best 110.2 passer rating, throwing for six TDs and zero INTs. He also has 170 rushing yards and a rushing TD.

Matthews leads the NFL with six sacks and has 15 solo tackles and a forced fumble. He had three sacks in back-to-back games in Weeks One and Two.

Roby averaged 25.8 yards per kickoff return in the first three games and had at least 70 kick-return yards in each of the Saints' first three games. He also has recorded at least one special teams tackle in each game and recorded a crucial fumble recovery in the Saints' win over the 49ers in Week Two.
