Browns starting ORT John St. Clair missed a second straight practice Thursday with an ankle injury, and head coach Eric Mangini indicated it was unclear whether he would practice Friday.

Tony Pashos replaced the injured St. Clair during the Week Three loss at Baltimore and would likely start in St. Clair's place if the 33-year-old St. Clair was declared out Sunday.

"I'm not sure what exactly his status will be tomorrow," Mangini said of St. Clair, according to the club. "I think he's gotten better throughout the course of the week, as typically happens with guys, so we'll play that one by ear.

"I thought Tony did a really nice job when he went in, but that didn't surprise me. Tony has done a nice job throughout the time that he's been here. At that point, we'll just look at it in terms of how functional is John, could he play, what role could he play if he wasn't the starter, could he be a backup, is it even worth doing that or do you go with someone who is healthier at that point?

"All those different things come into play, but in terms of tomorrow I'm not 100 percent sure. I'm hoping he can make a jump here, but we'll just have to see."

St. Clair has started the first three games at right tackle. Pashos, 30, signed with the Browns in free agency in the offseason. He has made 55 career starts.

The way we see it

Pashos is a capable replacement for St. Clair should he step into the lineup. Other than right tackle, the Browns are relatively healthy along the O-line. Reserve ORG Shawn Lauvao (ankle) returned to practice on a limited basis the last two days after missing the first three games. OLT Joe Thomas (elbow) has practiced fully the last two days.
