Cardinals RB Beanie Wells underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery after the team's final preseason game. The news was confirmed on Friday by head coach Ken Whisenhunt, more than three weeks after the surgery took place.

The team had previously made no mention of the surgery, but a CBSSports.com reporter noticed incision marks on Wells' knee Friday. After being asked about it, Whisenhunt admitted the operation to CBSSports.com and the Arizona Republic after the coach's regular post-practice session with the media Friday. Whisenhunt downplayed the importance of the operation.

Wells had initially refused to comment on the incision marks, but he confirmed that it had occurred once he learned that his coach had spoken about it. A torn meniscus was the cause of the operation.

Wells has yet to play this season and is questionable for Sunday's game vs. the Raiders. Whisenhunt told reporters that there's "a very good chance" Wells would get some playing time in the game.

The way we see it

The Cardinals' run game will improve with the second-year runner's return to the lineup, although Tim Hightower has been solid in his place.
