The Dolphins signed TE Jeron Mastrud on Tuesday and waived TE John Nalbone and RB Clifton Smith.

Mastrud was previously on the Dolphins' practice squad. Nalbone, the backup to TE Anthony Fasano, had not been productive in the team's first two games.

Smith was brought in before the season began to be the team's returner and improve the overall return game. He also had not been very effective in his two games with three kick returns for 52 yards and two punt returns for just nine yards.

Mastrud ranks first all-time among Kansas State tight ends with 106 receptions.

The way we see it

Mastrud is a better blocker than Nalbone, so the Dolphins will get an improvement there. In the Pro Football Weekly 2010 Draft Preview book, draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki said Mastrud "understands angles and leverage and gets good fits on the second level, deceptively working upfield to catch defenders off guard."

Smith had not been nearly the weapon on returns the Dolphins were hoping for. His longest kickoff return was 19 yards. Special-teams veteran Patrick Cobbs will continue returning kicks, possibly alongside rookie CB Nolan Carroll, who returned some kicks in the preseason. WR Davone Bess will be back on punt returns.
