The Steelers re-signed QB Byron Leftwich to their active roster Monday after releasing the veteran on Saturday.

Leftwich was released to open up a roster spot for a defensive lineman. "Done for d-line depth" was the reasoning on the Steelers' official Twitter account.

Starter Dennis Dixon left the Week Two game against the Titans with a left knee injury and veteran Charlie Batch took over under center. The Steelers won 19-11 thanks in large part to their defense. QB Ben Roethlisberger returns from suspension after Week Four.

DE Steve McClendon was released to make room for Leftwich after being signed Saturday.

The way we see it

This was the Steelers' plan all along. With all the teams that are experiencing QB problems, either no one tried to swoop in and sign Leftwich or the veteran had an agreement with the Steelers. He practiced fully last Friday and, assuming he is back at 100 percent, could start this Sunday, especially if Dixon is out. Leftwich has a strong arm but lacks mobility, and the Steelers gave up four sacks on Sunday.
