PFW executive editor and resident Packers expert Dan Arkush presents a running meter that indicates Packers’ top five MVP candidates up through their most recent game:


1. OLB Clay Matthews: The blonde bombshell is not only the Packers’ early candidate for team MVP through the first two games. He also qualifies as a truly legitimate candidate as the league MVP. With three sacks in each of the first two games, Matthews would shatter the league sack record if he stays on his early-season pace. Teams have attempted to double-team him, but defensive coordinator Dom Capers just keeps moving him around in search of mismatches with great success.

2. QB Aaron Rodgers: Admittedly no more than mediocre by his standards in the season opener, Rodgers had a much better game against the Bills — in the second half, that is. He actually has struggled in the first half of each of Green Bay’s games. But he was picture-perfect in the second half against Buffalo, with 11-of-13 completions for 145 yards and a pair of TDs. And his ability to run (nine-yard TD) continues to add a special dimension to the offense.

3. TE Jermichael Finley: Like Rodgers, Finley was far from his top form in Week One. But against the Bills, he stood out as a definite difference maker, with all four of his receptions (for 103 yards) coming on scoring drives.

4. LB Brandon Chillar: There’s a reason the Packers signed the versatile Chillar to a long-term contract. He’s the team’s best cover linebacker in nickel situations, and Green Bay’s pass defense the first two weeks has been exceptional. Chillar's first career interception of a tipped pass at the start of the third quarter against the Bills was the play that turned the momentum in Green Bay’s favor.

5. WR-RS Jordy Nelson: Nelson is making his presence felt as both a kickoff returner — he already has six kickoff returns of 20 or more yards — and as an occasional big-play receiver, who is especially effective in the middle of the field.
