The Jaguars re-signed TE Ernest Wilford on Thursday and waived first-year WR John Matthews to make room for Wilford, the club announced. Wilford spent the preseason with the Jaguars before he was waived on Sept. 4.
The Jaguars drafted Wilford as a wide receiver out of Virginia Tech in the fourth round of the 2004 draft. He signed with the Dolphins in 2008 and was waived a year later before returning to the Jaguars as a free agent last summer.
Wilford had 11 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown for Jacksonville last season.
The way we see it
Jaguars starting TE Marcedes Lewis had a big season opener when he hauled in two TD passes from QB David Garrard. Backup TEs Zach Miller and Zach Potter did not do much, and Wilford provides the team with a veteran who is familiar with the system and can contribute on special teams. His salary is not guaranteed, making Wilford a low-risk investment.
