After the 2009 season, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer stressed the need for the Bengals to be "a lot more of a dominating defensive team, hitting the quarterback more," as he put it. The Bengals were far from dominant in their season opener, and they did not record a sack in a humbling defeat at New England, a tough start for a defense that was one of the AFC's best in '09. The Bengals' pass-rush pressure is an area to watch. DRE Antwan Odom, who led Cincinnati in sacks in '09, potentially faces a four-game suspension; he has said via Twitter that he tested postive for a "banned" substance that "wasn't steroids or (performance-enhancing drugs)." Jonathan Fanene, who stepped in for the injured Odom last season and notched six sacks overall, suffered a hamstring injury in Week One. Versatile Michael Johnson has upside as a pass rusher and is another option off the edge.
