One month ago, everyone around the Patriots was talking about OLB Marques Murrell's sack of Saints QB Drew Brees in the preseason opener. On Monday, the Patriots released Murrell.
The Patriots had to make a roster spot available for OG Quinn Ojinnaka. Ojinnaka was acquired in a trade with the Falcons to bolster depth on an offensive line missing Pro Bowl OLG Logan Mankins and OT Nick Kaczur. He had to serve a one-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy.
The way we see it
With the release of LB Derrick Burgess, there were questions at the OLB spots, especially as rookie Jermaine Cunningham, the OLB of the future, recovers from an ankle sprain. Murrell's sack early in the preseason got people thinking he could be one of the guys in that rotation. However, Murrell recorded only one tackle in the season opener, while OLB Rob Ninkovich recorded four along with a QB hit and a forced fumble. Ninkovich and LB Tracy White show versatility, though, playing on special teams. Ninkovich was on the field for three units, and White saw action with all four special-teams units.
