A look at the Titans' depth chart signals they may have made a couple of savvy late-round selections in April's draft. Marc Mariani, a seventh-round pick, is the first-string punt and kickoff returner. His emergence comes as more highly regarded rookie WR Damian Williams, a third-round pick, didn't show as much as expected in the preseason, the way we hear it. At quarterback, the Titans have kept three passers, with sixth-round rookie Rusty Smith holding down the final spot on the depth chart. Smith beat out veteran Chris Simms for the job. In contrast, the Titans kept only two running backs to begin the season. Among the backs released before the season was undrafted rookie LeGarrette Blount, whom the Buccaneers then signed. A team observer notes that the coaching staff decided that neither Blount nor veteran Samkon Gado merited a spot as the No. 3 back.
