The Packers announced Thursday that they have signed CB Charles Woodson to a contract extension through 2014. The reigning Pro Football Weekly Defensive MVP had three years left on his current contract and the team agreed to add two more years to the deal. The new contract is consistent with the Packers' method of keeping their current players happy.
The six-time Pro Bowler led the league with nine interceptions and three interceptions returned for touchdowns in 2009. He is the only NFL player to register seven interceptions and two sacks in back-to-back seasons (2008-09) since sacks became an official league statistic in 1982. Woodson has recorded 28 of his 45 career interceptions during his four seasons with the Packers.
Woodson, who will be 34 in October, will need to step up again in 2010 with starters CB Al Harris and SS Atari Bigby nursing injuries and on the physically unable to perform list to start the season.
