The Dolphins announced Wednesday that they have signed RB-RS Clifton Smith. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In order to make room for Smith on the 53-man roster, the team waived OL Joe Reitz, whom it had picked up on a waiver claim Sept. 5.

Smith, a third-year veteran, spent two years with the Buccaneers after entering the league in 2008 as an undrafted free agent.

The 5-9, 190-pound Smith became the first Buccaneers kick returner ever selected to the Pro Bowl in ’08 after leading the team with 36 kickoff returns for 992 yards (27.6-yard average). He also became the first player in franchise history with a kickoff return for a touchdown and a punt return for a TD in the same season.

He led the league in kickoff-return average in ’09 with a 29.1-yard average.

The Dolphins were lacking a big-play threat at kick returner after trading away Ted Ginn Jr. this past offseason and not fully trusting rookie Nolan Carroll or backup RB Patrick Cobbs.
