The Texans have agreed with former Cardinals QB Matt Leinart on a one-year contract, The Houston Chronicle and reported Monday morning.

The Cardinals released Leinart, 27, on Saturday. He entered training camp as Arizona's starting quarterback but lost the job to Derek Anderson. The Cardinals elected to go with undrafted rookie QB Max Hall as their backup over Leinart.

In Houston, Leinart could push Dan Orlovsky for the top backup role behind starter Matt Schaub. Orlovsky, whom Houston signed to a three-year deal last offseason, disappointed in 2009 and was beat out by Rex Grossman for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Orlovsky has fared better in his second season with Houston but threw two interceptions in the Texans' preseason finale.

Leinart has made 18 career starts, but only one in the last two seasons. The Cardinals selected him in Round One of the '06 draft.
