The Jets agreed on a new contract with CB Darrelle Revis late Sunday night, according to multiple media outlets. The All-Pro had been holding out since Aug. 1, demanding a new deal.
While the team has not announced terms of the contract, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News has reported it is a four-year deal totaling $46 million, with $32 million guaranteed.
Revis confirmed the agreement early Monday morning, writing on his Twitter account, "I'm comin home baby!!! Revis Island LET'S GO." It is anticipated that Revis will sign his new contract Monday.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan flew to Miami, along with owner Woody Johnson, to visit with Revis on Sunday to convince the cornerback to return to the team. The trip apparently paid off, as the Jets will have the services of their top defensive player when they open the regular season on Sept. 13 vs. Baltimore on "Monday Night Football." Revis has not participated in any team activities since New York's training camp began, claiming he deserved to be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
"This is an intermediate step to what we hope to be an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said on a conference call with reporters. "For him to retire a Jet, for him hopefully to go to the Hall of Fame one day as a Jet, and to be in our to the ring of honor. So this is just the next step."
The return of Revis, who will pair with CB Antonio Cromartie, will allow the Jets to move first-round pick Kyle Wilson back to the nickel-back duties the team originally envisioned for him this season, making the secondary considerably more imposing than it was without Revis.
Revis had been scheduled to earn only $1 million this season, the fourth year of a six-year rookie deal. He was seeking to be paid more than Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha, who signed a three-year, $45.3 million contract a year ago, making Asomugha the highest-paid cornerback in the league.
