The Panthers have kept QB Tony Pike on the 53-man roster and have cut Hunter Cantwell.

Cantwell had been the backup QB entering camp but was passed on the depth chart by Jimmy Clausen.

Although Pike didn't fare well in preseason action, the Panthers apparently worried about the sixth-round pick making it through waivers and onto their practice squad.

Matt Moore has won the starting job, and Clausen will be the backup. Moore has only eight NFL starts.

Other players released by the Panthers on Saturday: WR Kenny Moore, DL Tank Tyler, OG Andrew Crummey, LB Quinton Culberson, WR Trent Guy, OG Ray Hisatake, DL Corvey Irvin, LB Mortty Ivy, FB Rashawn Jackson, TE Jamie Petrowski, RB Dantrell Savage, DB R.J. Stanford, RB Josh Vaughan, LB Sean Ware, DB C.J. Ware, DB  Brian Witherspoon, DL Eric Moore and OT Rob Petitti.
