Cincinnati acquired S Reggie Nelson from Jacksonville in exchange for CB David Jones and a conditional draft choice in a trade completed Saturday after both teams had gotten down to their 53-man roster limits.

The Bengals are hoping that Nelson, who had been on a downward trajectory with the Jaguars, will shore up a safety corps that was weakened when Gibril Wilson injured his left knee ligaments and was placed on injured reserve. Nelson had started 42 games during his three seasons in Jacksonville, but after intercepting five passes as a rookie, he totaled only two picks in the next seasons combined.

Jones served primarily as a reserve cornerback in Cincinnati, which had claimed him off waivers in 2007 from New England, which had drafted him in the fifth round that year. He replaced an injured Johnathan Joseph in the starting lineup for seven games in 2008, his only starts in three years. Jones has 56 tackles and no interceptions during his NFL career.
