The Saints placed veteran FS Darren Sharper on the physically-unable-to-perform list on Friday, according to Brian Allee-Walsh of

Sharper is recovering from offseason microfracture knee surgery and will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

The future Hall of Famer and five-time Pro Bowler started 14 games last season and led the NFL with nine interceptions, returning three of them for touchdowns. Sharper, a 14-year veteran, was an absolute force in the Super Bowl-champion Saints' secondary.

Malcolm Jenkins is likely to start in Sharper's place to open the season.
