Ravens FS Ed Reed will begin the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora is reporting.

Reed had a torn labrum in his hip, and he underwent reconstructive surgery to repair it in early May. Placing him on the PUP list means Reed will miss at least the first six weeks of the season. At that time the Ravens will be able to reassess his condition.

"It's a four- to six-month process to getting yourself back to 100 percent," Reed told Sirius Radio.

With Reed sidelined, the Ravens are expected to start third-year man Tom Zbikowski at safety next to Dawan Landry. Zbikowski has started four NFL games, all late last year.
