Michael Robinson was the 49ers' special-teams captain last season, but he apparently won't be duplicating that role in 2010 as multiple media outlets have reported that the team decided Friday to release him.

A former college quarterback at Penn State and a reserve running back in the pros, Robinson never found a place to play in the Niners' offense. He carved out a niche on special teams, both as a returner and gunner on coverage teams, but apparently his lack of a position limited his future with the 49ers.

Among the team's notable releases are CB Karl Paymah, LB Matt Wilhelm and WR Jason Hill.
