Jets QB Kellen Clemens' job as the No. 3 quarterback seems safe after the Jets released QB Kevin O'Connell on Tuesday.

Clemens and O'Connell were competing for the third-string job behind starting QB Mark Sanchez and backup Mark Brunell. O'Connell, a third-round draft pick in 2008 by the Patriots, was just 8-of-16 passing for 70 yards with two intereceptions and no touchdowns this preseason.

The Jets traded for O'Connell last preseason, giving a conditional draft pick to the Lions for the QB. That pick became a seventh-rounder in the 2011 draft.

O'Connell has only played in two career games with just six total pass attempts in 2008 with the Patriots. Clemens has played in 24 games with nine starts in his four seasons with the Jets.
