RB Marcus Mason was one of four players let go by the Chargers on Tuesday, as the team trimmed its roster to 75 players.
Mason, who ran for 127 yards on 32 rushing attempts in 2009 with the Redskins, was in contention for San Diego's No. 3 RB job behind Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles. He did not play in the team's third preseason game last Friday.
San Diego also released WR Gary Banks, OG Lee Grimes and LB Darry Beckwith.
The Chargers placed ILB Donald Butler, a third-round selection and the team's second overall pick in April's draft, on injured reserve Tuesday. Butler hurt his Achilles tendon at the start of training camp in early August.
In addition, the team signed P Glenn Pakulak. It is expected he will replace starting punter Mike Scifres for San Diego's preseason finale on Thursday but will not make the final roster.
