Former NFL WR Plaxico Burress has been denied work release and will have to serve his full prison term, according to the Associated Press.

Burress, who was sentenced to two years of incarceration after pleading guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in August 2009, was hoping to be released from prison early and resume his football career. He can appeal the decision, but cannot reapply for a work release until June 2011. The punishment stems from an incident in November 2008, when Burress accidently shot himself in the thigh with an unregistered handgun at a New York nightclub.

A first-round selection of the Steelers in 2000, Burress was considered an elite receiver in the league at the time of his arrest. He eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards four times during his nine-year career with the Steelers and Giants, and caught the game-winning touchdown for New York in Super Bowl XLII.
