Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday he does not know for certain if QB Donovan McNabb will be ready for the Redskins' opener against the Cowboys.

McNabb sat out Friday's preseason game against the Jets and watched Sunday's practice. He injured his left ankle against the Ravens in his second preseason game.

"I really don't know for sure," Shanahan said. "That's why it's day-to-day. We'll see how it goes."

Backup QB Rex Grossman also will sit out the Redskins' final preseason game against the Cardinals as a precaution, leaving John Beck and Richard Bartel at the helm.
