Donovan McNabb will avoid Rex Ryan's swarming Jets defense Friday, as his left ankle injury will keep him out of action.
The Redskins' QB suffered the injury in a preseason loss to the Ravens last weekend. He has not practiced this week and wore a protective walking boot on Tuesday.
McNabb is 16-of-34 passing for 264 yards and one touchdown in his first two preseason games with his new team. "I don't think it's a bad ankle sprain," said Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. "But it's still real sore right now, sore enough where he couldn't play this week if it was regular season."
The third preseason game tends to be the one where the starters get the most playing time, and McNabb is in the midst of learning a new system, but the Redskins don't want to take any risks. Backup QBs Rex Grossman, John Beck and Richard Bartel will each get a chance against the Jets.
Starting FB Mike Sellers (knee) and WR Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) will also miss Friday's game.
