The Giants better hope that Eli Manning can wear a helmet soon as backup QB Jim Sorgi's shoulder injury is worse than he originally thought.

Sorgi is unable to make a throwing motion because of the right shoulder injury suffered on Monday night while throwing a 34-yard touchdown pass. Jets LB Lance Laury hit him as he released the ball. Sorgi hopes to only be out 2-3 weeks, but he does not know the exact timetable.

Manning will not play on Saturday as he recovers from a forehead gash that required 12 stitches when he collided with the helmet of Jets SS Jim Leonhard. The Giants are being cautious with Manning, who cannot wear a helmet because of fears of irritating the injury. Manning traveled to Manhattan Friday to have the stitches examined.

Third string QB Rhett Bomar will take more snaps than he ever has as a pro against the Steelers Saturday night. The Giants signed QB Dominic Randolph Thursday and offensive coordinator Kevin Gillbride said safety Antrel Rolle could get some work in as an emergency quarterback.
