Some expected Saints rookie CB Patrick Robinson, the team's first-round pick this year, to challenge CB Randall Gay for the nickel-back job in training camp, but we hear Robinson has much to prove before he can be considered a legitimate contender to handle that role. Barring injury, we're told Robinson will be involved on special teams and could function as New Orleans' sixth or seventh defensive back depending on the status of FS Darren Sharper, who has yet to practice after undergoing knee surgery in the offseason. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams called Robinson his "whipping boy" and said "he doesn't know how to play," after the team's first preseason game. While Robinson's transition to the NFL has been difficult, he has apparently handled the criticism well and it's far too early to call him a bust. The Saints have good depth in the secondary and don't need to force Robinson onto the field if he isn't prepared.
