The Saints have signed free-agent RB Ladell Betts to a one-year contract, a source told NFL.com. The former Redskin provides New Orleans with insurance after backup RB Lynell Hamilton suffered a torn ACL in the team's preseason-opening game last Thursday.
Betts will join a backfield that includes starter Pierre Thomas and multiple threat Reggie Bush. The ninth-year veteran had worked out for New Orleans two weeks ago but wasn't signed at that time.
According to the source, Betts will receive a $755,000 base salary, a $50,000 signing bonus and could earn up to $1 million with incentives.
Betts rushed for 1,154 yards as a Redskin in 2006, but his number of carries dropped significantly in subsequent seasons. Washington released him in March.
