With the recent stunning retirement of Glen Coffee, the 49ers turned into a welcome destination for free-agent RB Brian Westbrook. The eight-year veteran signed a one-year deal with the team Monday afternoon.

The 49ers were 9-7 in 2009 and look to compete for the playoffs in a weak NFC West, a more appealing option than one of Westbrook's other suitors, the Rams. Westbrook has recorded two seasons of 1,000 yards rushing in his career and is a viable option catching passes out of the backfield. But concussions limited him to eight games in '09.

Westbrook provides depth in the 49ers' backfield alongside Frank Gore. The two have combined for 14,438 yards from scrimmage since 2005, the most of any active RB tandem in the league.

Westbrook will face his former teammates in Week Five when the Eagles head to San Francisco. He left Philadelphia as the franchise's all-time leader in yards from scrimmage and touches.
